Rennes thrashed Arsenal to 3-1 home win in the first leg of their Europa League round of 16 encounter.
Unai Emery’s men actually made a hopeful start to the match as they took the lead when Alex Iwobi’s intended cross hit the post before crossing the line.
They continued with a good hunger to add another one in the 11th minute but Rennes goalkeeper Tomas Koubeck saved Lucas Torreira’s effort.
Shortly after, Clement Grenier fired a free-kick over Petr Cech’s goal while Arsenal’s Shkodran Mustafi lashed a low shot wide of the target.
Cech saved Hatem Ben Arfa’s 35th-minute free-kick before the match was turned on its head six minutes later when Sokratis was sent off after picking up two yellow cards in quick succession.
Rennes took full advantage of their numerical superiority and equalised in the 42nd minute when Ben Arfa’s free-kick rebounded off the wall straight to Benjamin Bourigeaud whose 20-yard drive flew into the top corner of the net.
Cech denied Bourigeaud and Sarr in quick succession before Rennes moved ahead in the 65th minute when Mehdi Zeffane’s cross hit Nacho Monreal on the hip and looped over Cech.
But two minutes before end of game,James Lea Siliki cross home to see Rennes thrashed Arsenal to 3-1 defeat.
