The 39-year-old was also warned that he could be hit with a prison sentence of at least “five years” if found guilty of using a fake passport to enter Paraguay.

The decision to keep Ronaldinho in jail was taken after a behind-closed-doors hearing in front of Judge Gustavo Amarilla in Asuncion, Paraguay.

Amarilla, who mentioned the seriousness of the case and the discovery of new evidence, said that investigation is looking into possible criminal association and money laundering.

He said: “Ronaldinho needed to be kept in Asuncion so that there is no obstruction to the investigation.”

Ronaldinho’s lawyers offered a property bond as their get-out-of-jail card for the former attacking midfielder at the hearing.

But the judge decided the £600,000 gaff was not enough to guarantee the investigation could continue unheeded if Ronaldinho was put under house arrest or on bail.

Ronaldinho and his brother Roberto were arrested last Wednesday night for allegedly using false documentation upon their arrival in Paraguayan capital Asuncion.

Ronaldinho and Roberto are being kept in the same police cell in a building with 192 other prisoners.

The former Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan star is currently without a Brazilian passport because of an environmental fine he received in 2018.
