EFL final:Chelsea Legends, Lampard & Terry meets in the £170m showdown.
Two Chelsea legends, Frank Lampard and John Terry are set for EFL Championship final showdown.
It’s a fight between Derby County and Aston Villa to earn £170 million financial windfall.
Derby progressed into the game after defeating Leeds United 4-3 on aggregate and Villa defeated West Bromwich Albion 4-3 on penalties after being tied 2-2 in the semi-final.
The former Chelsea teammates facing off for a place in the Premier League next season has generated column inches, even though Terry is only assistant to Villans manager Dean Smith.
For Villa it is a second consecutive trip to the final, having been beaten by Fulham last season, as they aim to return to the top flight for the first time since 2016.
Derby, meanwhile, have been away from the Premier League since their infamous 2007/08 campaign. There have been more near misses since than they would like to remember, and their last play-off final saw them beaten by QPR in 2014.
According to Deloitte’s Sports Business Group, the £170 million revenue will come over even if the winner suffers relegation in their first season in the Premier League.
And if they manage to survive in the top flight, the number will rise to around £300m over the next five years.
Head of the Sports Business Group at Deloitte,Dan Jones speaking ahead of the game said it is the most valuable football match in the world
“This winner-takes-all clash will once again be a great advertisement for the Championship, with the winner guaranteed to see a significant boost to their revenues.
“The UEFA Champions League Final may draw the bigger worldwide audience of the two games but with Liverpool and Tottenham already assured of Champions League football next season, and a comparatively small bonus of £6.6million for the winner, the guaranteed financial reward on offer in North London is significantly higher than that in Madrid.”
