Arsenal’s £55m bid to sign defender Dayot Upamecano has been rejected by RB Leipzig, who want Emile Smith Rowe as part of the deal.
The German club demands Arsenal to include 19-year-old midfielder Smith Rowe either on loan or as a permanent move as part of the sale of their French 20-year-old.
Unai Emery’s side are optimistic that an agreement can be reached before Thursday evening’s transfer window closes. They value their highly-rated youth at £ 25 m, and ongoing negotiations.
The Gunners have already signed William Saliba for £27m in this window but the centre back has been loaned back to Saint-Etienne for the upcoming season.
The Premier League club are experiencing financial constraint as they have just completed £72m move for attacker Nicolas Pepe, and any deal for Dayot Upamecano would require staggered payments.
Arsenal and Leipzig enjoy a good relationship. Smith Rowe spent the second half of last season on loan at the Bundesliga club, though injuries limited the starlet’s appearances.
That came after he appeared regularly in the Europa League for Unai Emery’s side. His competitive debut against Vorskla Poltava made him the first player to be born after 2000 to appear for the club.
The Gunners have also been linked with Juventus centre back Daniele Rugani but are focusing on Dayot Upamecano, who joined Leipzig for £9m in 2017, ahead of Thursday’s deadline.
Arsenal last month saw a £25m bid for left-back Kieran Tierney turned down by Celtic.
