Manchester City begins title defence with 5-0 win over West Ham as Sterling nets first hat-trick of the season


Kyle Walker just turned on the burners for Manchester City when he accelerated past Aaron Creswell and Riyad Mahrez slips him in on the right.

The full-back cuts it into the centre and Gabriel Jesus flicked it past Lukasz Fabianki at the near post in the 25th minute.

The goal initially looked like Issa Diop had poked it into his own net!

West Ham looked totally lost in possession of the midfield and Kevin de Bruyne tried to break but Issa Diop made a strong tackle.

Declan Rice then came in to win a 50-50 challenge with Oleksandr Zinchenko and almost took out his manager.

Riyad Mahrez then pushed it left to Kevin de Bruyne, the midfielder stepped past one opponent and draws in another two, creating space for Raheem Sterling on the left.

De Bruyne holds before slipping him in and Sterling coolly slided it through the keeper’s legs.

Manchester City had their third goal from Gabriel Jesus disallowed via VAR checks.

Before it was lifted over the top to Raheem Sterling and the England winger instinctively turns and chips it over the keeper.

Sergio Aguero had stepped in to seek his first goal of the season barricading Sterling of hat-trick, but the Argentine saw his spot shoot carted, thanks for the new rule with VAR demanding a keeper must not step out of the line.

However, Sterling still picked his and the first hat-trick of the season defending their last season Premier League trophy.
