After coming out as transgender, Sapir Berman made sports history by officiating his first soccer match in Israel’s Premier League.
After officially announcing her transition in a press conference last week Tuesday, Berman took to the field for the match between Beitar Jerusalem and Hapoel Haifa on Monday, May 3.
Berman, aged 26 was already a top male referee in Israel’s leading football league, but decided to change to female as she had always seen herself as a female, even at a young age.
She told reporters that players had already begun addressing her in Hebrew using the feminine form of language.
“I really want to be a part of this phase, even if it means speaking to men when it isn’t appropriate and speaking to me as a woman. So thank you very much “Berman explained.
One fan held a banner praising Berman as a “super woman, amazing, courageous” outside the stadium in Haifa, Israel’s northern capital.
“This is the start of a long and exciting journey. We are honored to work with you, Sapir “As she officiated the match, the Israel Football Association tweeted.
