Residents in Port Harcourt were alarmed by the actions of unknown gunmen who fired sporadically into the air on Wednesday.
The gunmen were said to have driven around Ogbunabali in the Rivers State capital in a minibus in the evening, scaring residents.
The shooting caused residents in the area to flee for their lives, with some abandoning their vehicles on the road, resulting in a traffic jam in the area and surrounding streets.
A source who reportedly witnessed the incident was quoted by the Nation as saying: “Many drivers abandoned their vehicles and escaped while others tried to reverse to where they were coming from.
“The whole confusion caused serious traffic on all adjoining roads to the area my including the Port Harcourt – Aba expressway around the Garrison flyover.
“At one point, the gunmen got down from their bus off the main Ogbunabali street to try to clear the traffic but had to turn back after they could not Wade through the maze of abandoned vehicles”.
The Rivers Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, promised to verify the incident.
A statement on Wednesday by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier-General Mohammed Yerima said the troops clashed with the terrorists on Tuesday when they attempted to infiltrate Dikwa town of Borno.
