The failure of Real Madrid to sign Paul Pogba continues to run against Florentino Zidane andPerez with a counter.
And under increasing pressures on Zidane, Jose Mourinho could go back to the Santiago Bernabeu in the early season.
Current Real Madrid boss Zidane has made no secret of his desire to take the Manchester United midfielder to the Spanish capital this summer.
World Cup winner Pogba stated back in June that he was ready to leave Old Trafford, declaring: “I think for me it could be a good time to have a new challenge somewhere else.”
The Frenchman has been keen to link up with Zidane at the 13-time European champions, who wanted president Perez to sanction a £160 million switch.
Early in the summer, Perez initially preferred to sign Christian Eriksen from Spurs, but Zidane made clear he didn’t want the Dane – who himself issued a come-get-me plea.
Amid Real Madrid £300 million spending spree on the likes of Luka Jovic and Eden Hazard, Perez was never sold over paying huge money and wages for Pogba, a situation that led the player’s agent, Mino Raiola, into attempting to engineer a return to Juventus.
Suggestions in Spain are that Perez is already making contingency plans should Zidane – who didn’t have the desired impact after returning in March – get off to a poor start in 2019-20.
According to El Pais , ex-Madrid boss Mourinho is the man to whom Perez will return.
Still out of a job after leaving United last December, Mourinho this week declared that he is waiting for the right opportunity to make his reappearance on the touchline.
“I miss my football, I have the fire. The most difficult thing for me is to say ‘no’ to the possibilities I had to work. I have to be patient and wait for the right one.”
He could have been back before now, with Perez initially wanting to bring back Mourinho after Santiago Solari’s dismissal, only to be dissuaded, instead turning to Zidane.
He is unlikely to be dissuaded twice.
Therefore Perez has no interest in signing Pogba now, with the issues between the 26-year-old and Mourinho during their time together at United at the forefront of his mind.
The Portuguese wanted to sell Pogba last summer, but saw his plans blocked by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.
A complete breakdown in their relationship followed after Mourinho told Pogba he would never captain the club again – eventually seeing Pogba left on the bench for the loss at Liverpool in December that proved to be Mourinho’s last game as United boss.
As such, despite Zidane’s want, Real Madrid president, Perez is stepping up negotiations for the significantly cheaper Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek, a player his current manager previously declared himself uninterested in.
